Diabetes Classes
The Health Department offers FREE community education classes to help people with diabetes, as well as weight loss, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Diabetes classes are listed here. To see other classes, visit the Healthy Living Classes page. Several classes are also provided in Spanish.
All classes are held at the Health Department Annex, 805 Newtown Circle. Seating is limited and pre-registration is required . Reserve your spot for these free classes by calling 288-2423.
Diabetes Basics
Learn the basics of managing your diabetes in this two-hour class. We discuss foods to eat, how to check your blood sugar, and other ways of keeping your self healthy for a lifetime. Held on Wednesdays or Thursdays during the day. Call 288-2423 for times and dates.
Diabetes Meal Planning
This class is for those who have already attended the Diabetes Basics Class and wish to learn more about food and diabetes. We will review carbohydrate counting, strategies for eating out at restaurants, and more. Held at various times on Tuesdays. Call 288-2423 for times and dates.
Living Well with Diabetes
Diabetes can be overwhelming! This 3-part series covers a variety of topics, including nutrition sessions in every class. The focus is on these seven topics:

The classes are fun, interactive and informative. They are taught by nurses, registered dieticians, and Certified Diabetes Educators. You can be sure that you'll receive the most current and practical recommendations on how to stay healthy with diabetes and decrease your risks for serious complications.

Diabetes: Prevention is Key!
Are you at risk for type 2 diabetes?
- Overweight?
- 45 years or older?
- Exercise fewer than three times a week?
- Have high blood pressure or hight cholesterol?
- Had diabetes when pregnant or your baby weighted more than 9 pounds?
- Have a parent, brother or sister with diabetes?
- Have a family background of African American, Hispanic American/Latino, American Indian, Asian American or Pacific Islander?

Pre-Diabetes Class
Over 40% of Kentuckians have pre-diabetes. Pre-diabetes is where your blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet high enough to have diabetes. It used to be referred to as "borderline" diabetes. Come to this class and learn about how to make healthy lifestyle changes in order to prevent or delay diabetes.
