School Health Program

The School Health Program provides nursing services to the staff and students of 51 Fayette County public schools. Problems of acute or chronic illness, health promotion, disease prevention and health education are the focus of the school health programs.

School Nurse services include:

  • Required screenings for vision and scoliosis in targeted grades.
  • Services for the physically challenged students which involve direct nursing care, consultation with parent and teachers, and coordination of medical and school needs of the student. Referrals for students with possible ADD/ADHD and other learning problems to local pediatricians.
  • Monitoring and follow up of students and health education of school staff for those at risk students such as those who have insulin dependent diabetes or severe allergies requiring Epi-Pens.
  • Continuous health supervision (including first aid when at the school site) involves assessment, treatment within the scope of nursing practice, referral and follow-up.
  • Health education on a variety of topics to students, staff and parents.
  • Infectious disease control such as monitoring, screening and referrals.
  • Monitoring with assistance from school personnel for required immunizations, physical exams and TB skin tests for students.

Nurse-Practitioner Health Care Services

  • Provision of complete physicals, minimal laboratory tests, immunizations, TB skin tests and health education for students at Winburn Middle School and BSMS 
  • Health problems handled within scope of established protocols and/or referral to private physician or clinic.
  • Services provided by a nurse practitioner and RN through the UK College of Nursing.
