"Sunwise Oasis": Learn how to Prevent Skin Cancer

Did you know that childhood sunburns could increase your child’s risk of developing skin cancer as an adult?

The new SunWise Oasis Exhibit, developed by the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department and the Lexington Children’s Museum, gives you four easy ways to protect yourself from the sun.

  1. Slip on a shirt and sunglasses.
  2. Slap on a hat.
  3. Slop on sunscreen (SPF15 or above) and lip balm.
  4. Slide into the shade.

Inside this exhibit, visitors can learn how animals naturally protect themselves from the sun and they can watch an internationally recognized video on sun protection, “Slip, Slap, Slop.” The exhibit also has a “magic mirror” where parents can see how much sun damage their child may have already.

The Health Department’s goal is to educate parents about the importance of protecting their children’s skin early because 80% of sun damage happens by age 18. The exhibit, which is sponsored by the Good Samaritan Foundation, is located at the Lexington Children’s Museum in Victorian Square at Main and Broadway.
